Alma’s Name

Alma

Hugh Nibley: (Collected Works Vol. 8 Chpt 15) Alma means fostering mother.  Some critics criticize Alma’s name for being feminine.  It is therefore gratifying to announce that at the extreme end of the cave of letters, on the north side of the Naha Hever, in March 1961 professor Yadin put his hand into a crevice in the floor of the cave & lifted out a goat-skin bag containing a woman’s materials for mending her families clothes on their sad enforced vacation; & hidden away under the stuff at the very bottom of the bag, was a bundle of papyrus rolls wrapped in a cloth among them was a deed to some land near Enoged.  (The nearest town to the cave) owned by four men, one of whom signed himself, or rather dictated this name since he was literate, as “Alma, the son of Judah.”  The deed is produced in color on page. 177 of the Book & there at as life in A-L-M-A ben Yehudah, which Professor Yadin Sensibl, renders Alma with no reservations
