The House of the Lord Temple

The House of the Lord Temple

The Mesa Arizona Temple stands as a powerful symbol of community and faith, with a rich heritage that began its journey when announced on October 3, 2019. This sacred site was dedicated on November 28, 1921, by Heber J. Grant, following the momentous groundbreaking ceremony on April 25, 1922. Throughout its storied past, it has marked significant milestones, including its dedication from October 23 to 26, 1927, once again led by Heber J. Grant.

In its evolution, the Mesa Arizona Temple has welcomed countless visitors during an open house from March 19 to April 3, 1975, and celebrated its rededication on April 15-16, 1975, under the inspiring leadership of Spencer W. Kimball. More recently, it opened its doors to the public for an open house from October 16 to November 20, 2021, culminating in a joyous rededication on December 12, 2021, by Dallin H. Oaks.

Architecturally, the temple features a flat roof adorned with beautifully sculpted friezes, serving as a testament to artistic dedication. It houses four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and a baptistery within an impressive 75,000 square feet, standing at 53 feet high at an elevation of 1,240 feet. Set on 20 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, the exterior combines concrete reinforced with 130 tons of steel, gracefully enhanced by glazed, eggshell-colored terra cotta tiles.

Positioned just east of the original Mesa Townsite, a historic settlement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the temple anchors a timeless district that honors its residential character. The grounds invite visitors to explore a thoughtfully designed visitors’ center, a serene cactus garden, and expansive reflection pools. Each Easter season, the temple hosts “Jesus the Christ,” the largest outdoor Easter pageant in the world, drawing the community together in celebration. During the Christmas season, its grounds transform into a stunning Nativity display, illuminated by hundreds of thousands of lights, inspiring awe and wonder.

The Mesa Arizona Temple is remarkable for its many firsts: it was the first temple built in Arizona and the first to present the endowment in a language other than English. Formerly known as the Arizona Temple, it is celebrated for its rich tradition of delivering the endowment through live acting.

Its intricate friezes vividly depict the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, reminding all of the gathering of the Lord’s people in the last days. A significant renovation in February 1974 transformed the temple, modernizing facilities for single-room film presentations of the endowment while enhancing the visitor experience.

The recent renovation, which began on May 19, 2018, brought essential upgrades to infrastructure and design while honoring the temple’s historical character. These improvements beautifully accommodate annual events and enrich the inspiring landscapes, ensuring that the Mesa Arizona Temple remains a beacon of hope and faith for generations to come.
