Discovering the Kahului Hawaii Temple

The Kahului Hawaii Temple is a significant addition to the landscape of Maui, announced by Prophet Russell M. Nelson on October 1, 2023, during the October General Conference. This forthcoming construction marks the first temple specifically for the city and will cater to the spiritual needs of the island’s residents.

Kahului Hawaii Temple address is 1300 Maui Lani Parkway, Kahului, Hawaii

Situated at 1300 Maui Lani Parkway, Kahului, Hawaii, the Kahului Hawaii Temple will occupy a 7.6-acre lot. With an estimated size of approximately 19,000 square feet, it will be built at an elevation of 230 feet. This placement promises stunning views of the surrounding beauty of Maui.

Historical Context

Latter-day Saint missionaries first set foot in Hawaii in 1850, paving the way for a vibrant church presence in the region. Prior to the announcement of the Kahului Hawaii Temple, Hawaii was home to two established temples: the Laie Hawaii Temple, dedicated in 1919, and the Kona Hawaii Temple, which is currently undergoing renovations and was dedicated in 2000. The nearest temple to Kahului is the Laie Hawaii Temple, located approximately 110 miles northwest on the island of Oahu.

Community Impact

With nearly 75,000 members in approximately 145 congregations across Hawaii, including over 4,500 in Maui, the new temple serves to strengthen the faith of many. Kahului is about 25 miles east of Lahaina, a community that endured devastating wildfires in August 2023. Following this tragedy, church members were quick to respond. Many opened their homes to displaced individuals, while two stake centers on Maui became temporary shelters, accommodating hundreds.

Relief Efforts

In the wake of the wildfires, the Church provided significant humanitarian assistance. Members of the Kahului Hawaii Stake transformed their gymnasium into a shelter, swiftly putting in partitions for family privacy. Humanitarian supplies were also dispatched from the bishops’ storehouse in Honolulu and Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, assisting those in need during a critical time.

Future Developments

While there are currently no renderings for the Kahului Hawaii Temple available to the public, and no groundbreaking or site dedication events announced, the excitement around its future is palpable. The Kahului Hawaii Temple will proudly stand as the third Latter-day Saint Temple in Hawaii and the first specifically for the island of Maui.

As plans progress, this new spiritual center will undoubtedly have a lasting impact not only on the faith of its members but also on the broader community as it continues to heal and rebuild.
