Revitalizing a Sacred Icon: The Exciting Upgrades to the Salt Lake Temple
LDS Temple News is excited to share a breath of fresh air for one of the most iconic landmarks—Salt Lake Temple. Since renovations began in late 2019, this sacred site has been undergoing a transformative journey, blending cutting-edge safety features with preserving its historic charm. Here’s a quick look at the remarkable upgrades that are making this temple shine even brighter:
Seismic & Structural Marvels
- Base Isolation System: Nearly 100 advanced base isolators now sit beneath the foundation, allowing the temple to sway up to five feet in any direction during an earthquake—maximizing safety without compromising beauty.
- Vertical Coring: 46 massive holes, up to 150 feet deep, have been drilled through granite walls to house tension cables that anchor the spires, ensuring stability through time.
- Foundation Reinforcement: A sophisticated “jack and bore” technique has strengthened the foundation with reinforced steel tubes filled with concrete beneath existing footings.
- Steel Roof Trusses: Heavy-duty steel trusses now support the roof, fortifying the vital connection between north and south walls for enduring strength.
Inside the Temple: A Heritage Preserved & Enhanced
- Victorian Restoration: The interior has been painstakingly restored to evoke its 1893 elegance—dark woods, lush colors, and period-appropriate lighting bring history to life.
- Murals & Architectural Gems: Original murals have been carefully documented and preserved, while cherished features like cast-iron oxen, Tiffany glass windows, and stone spiral staircases are back in full glory.
- High-Efficiency Systems: Outdated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems have been replaced with state-of-the-art, efficient equipment to ensure sustainability and comfort.
Expansion & Accessibility: Embracing the Future
- Underground Growth: A new three-story underground addition to the north provides 100,000 sq ft for offices and ordinance rooms—ready to serve more members.
- Increased Capacity: From 13 to 22 sealing rooms, with an additional baptistry, the temple now welcomes more visitors for sacred ordinances.
- Enhanced Navigation: Modernized corridors and high-capacity elevators make moving around easier and more comfortable.
- Innovative Presentation: Transitioning from traditional room-to-room visits, the temple now features single-room video presentations in over 90 languages, making sacred experiences more accessible worldwide.
Beautiful Grounds & Better Connections
- New Entry Pavilions: Elegant pavilions with skylights now grace the northern entrance, offering welcoming vistas.
- Underground Tunnel: An underground pedestrian passage beneath North Temple Street connects visitors directly from the Conference Center parking lot to the temple.
