A Historic Annunciation and Dedication
The journey of the Birmingham Alabama Temple began with its announcement on September 11, 1998. Less than two years later, the groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on October 9, 1999, led by Stephen A. West. This pivotal event marked the start of a significant chapter for the local LDS community.
The temple was officially dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley on September 3, 2000. Since then, it has served as a sacred space for worship, ordinances, and family sealing.
Design and Architecture
The Birmingham Alabama Temple is a stunning architectural marvel, set on a 5.6-acre lot at an elevation of 661 feet. Its exterior is finished with imperial Danby white marble, quarried from Vermont, lending it a timeless, pristine appearance. The temple features a distinctive single attached spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, symbolizing the faith and hope of the LDS community.
Inside, the temple encompasses 10,700 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry, all designed to serve the spiritual needs of visitors and members.
Community and Visitors
The temple’s influence extends beyond its spiritual function. It opened its doors for a public open house from August 19th through the 26th, 2000, welcoming 21,134 visitors eager to explore this sacred space. Its grounds are celebrated for their beauty; the city of Gardendale recognized the temple’s picturesque grounds with a beautification award, emphasizing its role as a visual centerpiece in the community.
During the winter months, visitors and members often find comfort in the nativity scene placed at the temple, a beloved tradition that reflects its family-centered mission and community spirit.
