The dedication began with the groundbreaking ceremony on March 30, 1998, led by Elder Hugh W. Pinnock. Elder Pinnock shared vital counsel, urging attendees to live by the commandments and prepare spiritually for their future visits to the House of the Lord. He encouraged the need for TempleReady files, enabling families to engage in sacred ordinances for their ancestors, as well as to support the spiritual development of youth.
Following this, the public open house ran from October 8th through the 23rd in 1999. It was a unique opportunity for the community to appreciate the beauty and purpose of this new House of the Lord.
The Dedication Ceremony
The House of the Lord was formally dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th President of the Church, on November 20th and 21st, 1999. He was accompanied by notable leaders, including President Thomas S. Monson and Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, among others. President Hinckley’s remarks during the dedication highlighted the importance of the House of the Lord in the lives of its members, as he prayed for all who would come to this sacred place. His words echoed the enduring significance of service and the potential to connect with loved ones beyond this life.
Architectural Features
Constructed on 10 acres at an elevation of 3,444 feet, the Billings Montana Temple features architectural elegance with a Wyoming white dolomite precast concrete exterior. It showcases a single central spire that proudly holds a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Within its 30,800 square feet, the House of the Lord efficiently includes two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Designed with space in mind, it offers the amenities typical of larger temples — such as a laundry, brides’ room, chapel, and clothing rental desk — all in an optimized footprint.
Landscaping and Environment
The landscape surrounding the temple is equally remarkable, adorned with 250 trees and more than 4,500 shrubs. This beautifully curated environment complements the serene atmosphere of the House of the Lord, inviting reflection and peace.
