The Billings Montana Temple stands as a testament to faith and dedication in the heart of Montana. Groundbreaking took place on March 30, 1998, a day marked by the participation of Elder Hugh W. Pinnock, who emphasized the importance of living commandments, preparing a TempleReady file, and teaching youth the significance of eternal obligations. His message highlighted the vital role this House of the Lord would play in the lives of many.
A Historical Milestone
The public open house for the Billings Montana Temple occurred from October 8 through 23, 1999, providing an opportunity for the community to experience its beauty before its dedication. This significant event culminated in a sacred dedication performed by President Gordon B. Hinckley, the 15th President of the Church, on November 20 and 21, 1999. President Hinckley was joined by notable leaders including President Thomas S. Monson and Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, reflecting the importance of this occasion. During the dedication, President Hinckley expressed a prayer for all who would utilize the House of the Lord in their spiritual endeavors.
Architectural Features and Design
Nestled on 10 acres at 3100 Rim Point Drive, the Billings Montana Temple boasts a striking exterior finished with Wyoming white dolomite precast concrete. It is recognized for its single central spire featuring a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, making it a distinctive addition to the region’s skyline. At an elevation of 3,444 feet, this is the first House of the Lord built in Montana and is the 66th dedicated Temple currently in operation.
Inside the House of the Lord
The interior of the Temple is thoughtfully designed for both beauty and functionality. Spanning 30,800 square feet, it efficiently includes two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Visitors can also find amenities such as a laundry, brides’ room, chapel, and clothing rental desk, all designed within an intimate space that rivals the offerings of larger Temples.
The main foyer features a clear skylight, allowing patrons to gaze up at the magnificent Angel Moroni statue, further enriching the experience within these sacred walls.
The Grounds
Surrounding the Billings Montana Temple are 250 trees and over 4,500 shrubs, creating a serene landscape that complements the House of the Lord’s architectural splendor. Despite challenging weather conditions during the groundbreaking ceremony, the enthusiasm of over 4,800 attendees from the U.S. and Canada marked a momentous occasion in the history of faith in Montana.
