A Glimpse into History
The Manti Utah Temple is the third temple dedicated for operation under The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with its roots tracing back to June 25, 1875, when it was first announced. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 25, 1877, led by none other than the Prophet Brigham Young himself. It marked the beginning of a monumental journey, seeing the temple rise majestically on a hill that many now refer to as “Temple Hill.”
Architectural Splendor
Erected on 27 acres of stunning land at an elevation of 5,657 feet, the temple spans an impressive 74,792 square feet and reaches a height of 179 feet. Crafted from fine-textured cream-colored oolite limestone quarried from the surrounding area, its exterior harmonizes with the natural beauty of its setting. Perhaps one of its most striking features is the twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that elegantly wind five stories high on the west side. Constructed with walnut handrails, these staircases are a marvel of engineering and craftsmanship, showcasing the ingenuity of the early pioneers.
Unique Features
Unlike many temples, the Manti Utah Temple has no sign displaying its name, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its environment. A large arching tunnel once ran under the east tower, permitting cars to traverse the area, a feature that piqued the curiosity of many visitors. This tunnel is now closed, but remnants can be seen near the sealing rooms.
Inside, the temple houses four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and a baptistry, offering a sacred space for various ordinances and ceremonies. Throughout its halls, visitors can find beautiful painted murals in the Creation Room, Garden Room, and World Room—each illustrating biblical themes and enhancing the serene atmosphere.
Renovations and Dedications
The Manti Utah Temple has experienced several renovations over the years, leading to multiple public dedications. The most recent dedication took place on April 21, 2024, led by Prophet Russell M. Nelson, following an extensive renovation that began in 2021. This renovation marked the end of a historic chapter, as the live endowment presentations that had been performed for 133 years were discontinued.
The temple has also hosted open houses, the latest occurring from March 14 to April 5, 2024, allowing the community and guests to explore its enchanting interiors and appreciate its intricate artistry.
Historical Events
No history of the Manti Utah Temple would be complete without mentioning the dramatic events that have unfolded on its grounds. In 1928, a lightning strike ignited the east tower, causing a fire that burned for three hours. Miraculously, the structure survived, only to emerge more resilient.
