The Manti Utah Temple’s journey began on June 25, 1875, when it was announced to the faithful. The groundwork for this sacred space was laid on April 25, 1877, during a ceremony led by none other than the Church’s founder, Prophet Brigham Young. With a rich history spanning decades, the temple has undergone several renovations, leading to multiple dedications and public open houses, with the most recent open house occurring from March 14 to April 5, 2024, showcasing its updated beauty to all who wish to visit.
The last dedication took place on April 21, 2024, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson. This event not only marked a significant moment in the temple’s legacy but also reignited interest in its architectural wonders and spiritual significance.
A Stunning Architectural Marvel
Spanning 74,792 square feet and rising 179 feet high, the Manti Utah Temple is a remarkable accomplishment of pioneer craftsmanship. Built with fine-textured cream-colored oolite limestone quarried directly from the site where it stands, the temple harmonizes beautifully with its natural surroundings. Two elegant towers grace the exterior, although uniquely, the temple does not feature a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, setting it apart from many other temples.
Inside, the temple offers various sacred spaces, including four instruction rooms, nine sealing rooms, and a beautifully designed baptistry. A particularly captivating feature is the twin self-supporting, open-centered spiral staircases that gracefully wind five stories up in the west towers, showcasing the unparalleled expertise of the artisans of that era. These staircases are often celebrated as an engineering marvel, exhibiting a seamless flow without visible joints in the walnut railings.
Visitors can also note the large arched tunnel beneath the east tower, a historical structure that once allowed vehicles to traverse the grounds. While now closed, the arch remains visible from inside the temple, providing a glimpse into its past.
