Attention, everyone! The buzz around Provo, Utah, is palpable. If you haven’t heard yet, significant changes are on the horizon with the construction of the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple! Mark your calendars, because this beautiful new landmark isn’t just any structure; it’s a reflection of the community’s vibrant faith and spirit.
A Vision Realized
On October 3, 2021, the excitement began when Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the groundbreaking plans for the new temple. Fast forward to February 24, 2024, and construction is all set to commence! This magnificent temple will occupy 17 acres—an upgrade from the previous site, which was just 15 acres. That extra space is needed for what promises to be a remarkable addition to the Provo landscape.
A Granitic Marvel
Planning a visit? You’ll want to take note of the stunning architectural design! The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will feature an impressive 163,000 square feet of sacred space constructed of radiant granite. Its central spire will rise majestically to 265 feet and 6 inches—the highest point in the area—lending an aura of serenity and gravitas to the neighborhood. And while there will be no gold-leafed Angel Moroni adorning the spire, don’t despair—the old Moroni is currently in storage, awaiting new beginnings.
A Welcoming Space
In addition to its beautiful exterior, the temple promises to be more accessible than ever. While it will not share a parking lot with any meeting house, fear not! A dedicated lot will be available across the street, ensuring that visitors can easily come and go as they explore the spiritual offerings.
A Temple for All
The Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple will be the 6th temple in Utah, serving a burgeoning community that is already home to about 16.8 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and around 500 congregations statewide. It is anticipated to be completed in late 2027, and trust us, it will be well worth the wait!
A New Chapter
Another noteworthy change is the name itself! Formerly known simply as the Provo Utah Temple, its new moniker retains a sense of geographical pride while looking forward to what the future holds. And let’s not forget, this temple will proudly stand at an elevation of 4,876 feet (1,486 meters) above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Rock Canyon.
