Discovering the Bountiful Utah Temple
The Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, marking a pivotal point in both history and local spirituality. Located at 640 S Bountiful Blvd, Bountiful, Utah 84010, this impressive edifice conveys a sense of purpose and grace.
A Brief History
The journey of the Bountiful Utah Temple began on February 2, 1990, when its announcement captured the imagination of many. Fast forward to May 2, 1992, the groundbreaking ceremony was led by Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. An impressive 7,500 people attended the event, with an additional 2,500 joining remotely, showcasing the widespread commitment to this significant endeavor.
The public open house from November 4 to December 17, 1994, attracted 870,361 guests, all guided by a remarkable 45,000 volunteers. Such dedication illustrates the deep-rooted connection many feel towards this sacred space.
Dedication and Design
From January 8 through 14, 1995, Prophet Howard W. Hunter dedicated the Bountiful Utah Temple in a series of 28 dedicatory sessions, attended by 201,655 individuals. It’s noteworthy that during his short tenure, he dedicated only one other Temple—the Orlando Florida Temple—making this a monumental occasion.
The building itself covers 104,000 square feet and stands 176 feet tall, set at an elevation of 5,160 feet among the picturesque foothills of Bountiful, easily viewed from across the city and the nearby I-15 freeway. This elevated position also offers stunning views of the Great Salt Lake.
Architectural Features
Constructed with Bethel white granite, the Temple boasts a striking central spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The design includes four instruction rooms and eight sealing rooms, as well as a single baptistry, catering to various needs.
The Temple is built on 9 acres and features a two-story parking garage, with the most convenient access located on the west side of the grounds.
Unique Stories
One fascinating piece of history involves the Angel Moroni statue, which was struck by lightning on May 22, 2016. The statue was replaced on June 1, 2016, with a new one that was originally intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple. This anecdote adds an element of resilience to its story.
The floor plan of the Bountiful Utah Temple mirrors that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, although each offers a unique backdrop and character, enhancing the tapestry of Temples throughout the state.
