Discovering the Bountiful Utah Temple
Nestled in the serene foothills of Bountiful, Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With its striking design and significant history, this Temple has attracted attention since its announcement to the public on February 2, 1990.
A Monumental Beginning
The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on May 2, 1992, led by the Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. This momentous occasion saw an impressive turnout of 7,500 attendees, with an additional 2,500 participating remotely. The excitement continued to swell with the public open house from November 4 to December 17, 1994, where over 870,000 individuals had the opportunity to experience the interior, aided by the remarkable efforts of 45,000 volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly.
Dedication and Design
The Bountiful Utah Temple was dedicated by Prophet Howard W. Hunter during a series of dedicatory sessions from January 8 to January 14, 1995. In his brief time as Prophet, he dedicated only one other Temple—the Orlando Florida Temple. The dedication of the Bountiful Utah Temple involved 28 sessions, attended by 201,655 people, marking a milestone for the area.
Architectural Features
Spanning an impressive 104,000 square feet and standing 176 feet tall at an elevation of 5,160 feet, this Temple is built on 9 acres. Carved from Bethel white granite, its exterior shines brightly against the sky. A striking central spire reaches upward, crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which incidentally faced an eventful incident when it was struck by lightning on May 22, 2016. The statue was replaced just a few weeks later, on June 1, 2016, after initially being intended for the Meridian Idaho Temple.
Inside, the Temple features four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a baptistry—designs that create a welcoming atmosphere for those who enter.
Location and Views
Perched on the eastern bench, the Bountiful Utah Temple offers breathtaking views across the Great Salt Lake and is easily visible from the I-15 freeway and throughout Bountiful. Its strategic elevation allows one to appreciate the scenic beauty of the surroundings.
A Unique Place in Utah
As the first Temple established in Davis County and the eighth in the state of Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple holds a unique place in the hearts of many. Its floor plan closely resembles that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, though each presents its individual charm against their respective backgrounds.
