Exploring the Bountiful Utah Temple
The Bountiful Utah Temple, a prominent location for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holds a significant place in both the hearts of its members and the landscape of Bountiful, Utah. As the 47th dedicated Temple of the Church, it stands as a testament to faith and dedication within the region.
A Brief History
On February 2, 1990, the announcement for the Bountiful Utah Temple was made public, paving the way for a landmark occasion in Davis County. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on May 2, 1992, under the direction of Prophet Ezra Taft Benson, drawing a crowd of 7,500 attendees, with an additional 2,500 joining remotely.
The excitement grew as the public open house ran from November 4 to December 17, 1994, attracting an impressive 870,361 people. This monumental event would not have been possible without the altruism of around 45,000 volunteers who contributed their time and effort.
Dedication week took place from January 8 to January 14, 1995, led by Prophet Howard W. Hunter. Interestingly, during Prophet Hunter’s brief tenure, he dedicated only one other Temple—the Orlando Florida Temple. The dedication of the Bountiful Utah Temple consisted of 28 sessions, with approximately 201,655 participants witnessing this momentous occasion.
Architectural Grandeur
The Bountiful Utah Temple occupies a serene 9-acre plot and features a two-story parking garage, with easy access provided from the west side of the grounds. The exterior is adorned with Bethel white granite, lending a striking appearance that complements the surrounding landscape.
At 176 feet tall and located at an elevation of 5,160 feet, the Temple is positioned on the east bench, allowing for stunning views of Bountiful and the Great Salt Lake. The central spire, topped with a gold-leafed painted Angel Moroni statue, adds a graceful element to the skyline, though it has faced challenges; in May 2016, the statue was struck by lightning but was quickly replaced on June 1, 2016.
Interior Features
Inside, the Bountiful Utah Temple boasts exquisite facilities, including four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a single baptistry. With a total area of 104,000 square feet, it is regarded as a larger Temple, providing ample space for its various purposes.
Unique Characteristics
The floor plan of the Bountiful Utah Temple is notably similar to that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple; however, the surrounding grounds give each location a distinctive atmosphere.
A Pillar in Davis County
This Temple holds the honor of being the first built in Davis County and the eighth overall in the beautiful state of Utah. Its visibility across Bountiful and along I-15 showcases its significance, making it an easily recognizable aspect of the local terrain.
