Discovering the Bountiful Utah Temple: A Gem in Davis County
Nestled on the east bench of Bountiful, Utah, the Bountiful Utah Temple stands as the 47th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With its majestic height of 176 feet and an impressive square footage of 104,000, this beautiful site has become an integral part of the landscape, easily visible from Bountiful and the I-15 freeway.
Historical Milestones
The journey to its completion began on February 2, 1990, when the Temple was first announced to the public. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 2, 1992, officiated by the Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. This significant event drew a crowd of 7,500 attendees, with an additional 2,500 participating remotely.
Fast forward to late 1994, the public open house ran from November 4 through December 17, showcasing the interior to an astounding 870,361 guests. This remarkable event would not have been possible without the dedicated effort of 45,000 volunteers who contributed their time and skills.
The dedication by Prophet Howard W. Hunter occurred over a week from January 8 to January 14, 1995. During his tenure, he dedicated only one other Temple, located in Orlando, Florida. A total of 28 dedicatory sessions witnessed the attendance of 201,655 individuals, each sharing in the momentous occasion.
Architectural Features
Constructed from Bethel white granite, the exterior of the Bountiful Utah Temple presents a striking appearance. Dominating the skyline is its single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed statue of Angel Moroni, which after being struck by lightning on May 22, 2016, was replaced on June 1, 2016. Interestingly, this statue was originally meant for the Meridian Idaho Temple before finding its home here.
Inside, the Temple features four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a dedicated baptistry. The thoughtfully designed layout mirrors that of the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple while maintaining its unique charm.
Location and Accessibility
Spanning nine acres, the grounds also include a two-story parking garage, with the most convenient access located on the west side of the Temple. Perched at an elevation of 5,160 feet, the Temple not only provides a serene environment for those who visit but also offers breathtaking views of the Great Salt Lake.
