Exploring the Draper Utah Temple: A Treasure in Architecture and Faith

Nestled in the heart of Draper, Utah, the Draper Utah Temple serves as a significant site for those who hold its values dear. Located at 14065 Canyon Vista Lane, this remarkable building stands on 12 acres, offering a peaceful atmosphere that reflects its purpose.

A Timeline of Significance

The journey towards the completion of the Draper Utah Temple began on October 2, 2004, when it was announced. The groundbreaking took place on August 5, 2006, presided over by then-Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. He remarked, “It is a great tribute to our people. They are so faithful in temple attendance, and it is for this reason that we construct this beautiful house of the Lord.”

The beautiful structure opened to the public for an open house from January 15 to March 14, 2009, welcoming an impressive total of 684,721 guests. The formal dedication occurred from March 20 to March 22, 2009, led by Prophet Thomas S. Monson.

Architectural Marvel

The Draper Utah Temple boasts an exquisite exterior finish crafted from white granite imported from China, while its limestone elements come from France. Spanning 58,300 square feet and reaching a height of 166 feet, the design features a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni, installed on July 8, 2008.

Each detail of the design carries a story, including the incorporation of Makore wood from Africa, giving a distinctive touch to the interior. With 221 exterior windows and 50 interior windows, the structure features a total of 35,420 hand-cut pieces of glass, beautifully adorned with the Log Cabin quilt pattern, reminiscent of early pioneer life.

Interior Features

Inside the Draper Utah Temple, the focus on natural beauty continues. The largest sealing room can accommodate 80 patrons, and the instruction rooms are adorned with hand-painted panoramas showcasing breathtaking mountain scenes. Notably, the baptistry is situated on the downhill western side, inviting plenty of natural light through its floor-to-ceiling windows.

The architecture also reflects functionality, with four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Each space is designed with careful thought to enhance the experience of those who come here.

Community Impact

Serving as the twelfth temple in Utah and the third in the Salt Lake Valley, the Draper Utah Temple enriches the local area, situated on the same lot as a meeting house. The spacious parking lot accommodates up to 492 vehicles, making it easier for participants to access the various programs and events held here.

Conclusion

The Draper Utah Temple stands as a testament to faith, craftsmanship, and community spirit. Its beautiful design and meaningful details make it not just a place for individuals but a cherished part of Draper’s landscape. Whether you’re admiring its architectural beauty from afar or exploring its nuanced interior, the Draper Utah Temple truly represents a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and spiritual dedication.
