Exploring the Draper Utah Temple: A Beautiful Addition to Utah’s Landscape
Nestled at 14065 Canyon Vista Ln, Draper, Utah 84020, the Draper Utah Temple adds a remarkable presence to the area’s scenery. Since its announcement on October 2, 2004, this elegant edifice has captivated many with its stunning architectural features and rich history.
The journey to the Draper Utah Temple’s completion began with a groundbreaking ceremony held on August 5, 2006, officiated by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. His words at the event resonate with the community: “It is a great tribute to our people. They are so faithful in temple attendance, and it is for this reason that we construct this beautiful house of the Lord.”
The Temple opened its doors to the public for a remarkable open house from January 15 to March 14, 2009, where an impressive 684,721 guests toured the space.
One of the standout features of the Draper Utah Temple is the gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which was installed on July 8, 2008. The dedication of the Temple took place from March 20 to 22, 2009, led by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson, further marking its significance in the region.
Unique Features and Design
Spanning 58,300 square feet over a 12-acre site, the Temple stands tall at 166 feet and reaches an elevation of 5,136 feet. It is the twelfth temple built in Utah and the third in the Salt Lake Valley, making it an integral part of the state’s spiritual landscape. Its exterior finish is crafted from exquisite white granite sourced from China, complemented by limestone from France, giving it a polished and refined appearance.
The architectural design includes a single attached central spire topped by the Angel Moroni statue. Inside, visitors can find four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and one baptistry, designed with thoughtful layouts to accommodate various needs. The largest sealing room can comfortably seat 80 patrons.
One of the artistic themes featured throughout the interior is that of the sego lily, which is officially designated as Utah’s state flower. This theme adds a touch of local beauty and pride to the ambiance of the Temple.
Attention to Detail
The Draper Utah Temple showcases a remarkable attention to detail with 221 exterior windows and 50 interior windows, alongside 432 door panels. In total, there are 35,420 hand-cut pieces of glass, featuring the Log Cabin quilt pattern reminiscent of the early pioneers. This intricate design not only reflects a commitment to craftsmanship but also pays homage to the area’s rich history.
The baptistry, thoughtfully situated on the downhill western side, enjoys abundant natural light through its floor-to-ceiling windows, enhancing the serene atmosphere. Meanwhile, the ordinance rooms feature hand-painted panoramas depicting the beautiful mountain scenes of Draper’s Corner Canyon, providing a breathtaking backdrop for reflection.
