Located at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple has a rich history and is an architectural wonder that captivates those who pass by.

Historical Significance

Announced on March 3, 1937, this facility has a profound significance in the local and broader context. The groundbreaking took place on December 19, 1938, and was officiated by Elder David Smith. The site was dedicated on October 19, 1940, by the Prophet David O. McKay, marking a pivotal moment for Idaho Falls.

Renovations and Recent Developments

In recent years, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple underwent renovations that were completed over two years, culminating in its rededication on June 4, 2017, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. The updates included notable enhancements, such as an additional exit for the bridal room, a spacious waiting area for weddings, and various upgrades to electrical systems.

The last public open house took place from April 22 through May 20, 2017, allowing many to appreciate the newly renovated interiors and the thoughtful design that enhances both functionality and aesthetics.

Architectural Features

Spanning an impressive 85,624 square feet, the building stands at a height of 156 feet and is elevated at 4,716 feet above sea level. The exterior is crafted from reinforced concrete, finished with white cement and aggregate cast stone that form thick, durable walls. A notable architectural element is the single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, which has become an iconic feature.

Additionally, the design draws inspiration from visions of the ancient Nephite Temple, and the facility is structured to accommodate spiritual activities, containing four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry.

Unique Features and Landscape Enhancements

Originally named the Idaho Falls Temple, it was the first one constructed in Idaho and is unique for its central spire design—a feature not seen in previous buildings of its kind. In the 1960s, the site included three reflection ponds populated with small fish and water lilies. However, these were transformed into flowerbeds, and by 2011, significant landscaping renovations introduced a waterfall feature that adds to the serene atmosphere of the grounds.

When excavating for the building, large lava rock was uncovered and utilized in the construction of the basement walls, further enhancing its robust character.

A Rare Experience

Interestingly, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is among the only seven facilities where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before reaching the Celestial Room. This distinctive aspect adds to its appeal. It is also noteworthy that this is the only Temple dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith and the first of its kind to offer a live acting presentation of the endowment ceremony.

On September 5, 1983, a helicopter was used to install the gold-leafed Angel Moroni atop the spire, adding to the storied history of the building.

Conclusion

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple stands as a remarkable feat of architecture and historical significance, drawing admiration for both its beauty and the deep-rooted legacy it represents. Its enhancements and rich narrative continue to engage and inspire those who interact with it.
