Located at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, this cherished location continues to inspire countless individuals.

Historical Timeline

The journey of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when it was officially announced. Plans quickly progressed, and by December 19, 1938, the ground was broken under the guidance of Elder David Smith. The significance of this date marks the inception of a remarkable journey toward completion.

The dedication occurred on October 19, 1940, led by Prophet David O. McKay, establishing the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple as the first Temple built in Idaho. Notably, it is also the only Temple dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. Initially known as the Idaho Falls Temple, it was the first to feature a central spire, culminating in a distinct architectural style.

Architectural Features

Covering 85,624 square feet, this inspiring site is built on 8.28 acres and stands tall at 156 feet with an elevation of 4,716 feet. The exterior showcases a unique finish made of reinforced concrete with a white cement finish complemented by 16-inch thick walls crafted from aggregate cast stone. A central spire, crowned by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, adds to its aesthetic brilliance.

Inside, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple hosts four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, allowing for a variety of sacred experiences. Interestingly, it is one of only seven Temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room.

Renovations and Modernization

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple underwent a significant renovation that started in 2015 and culminated in its rededication on June 4, 2017, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring. The renovation focused on modernizing various aspects, including electrical systems, and added features such as an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room and a spacious wedding waiting area. A notable transformation in landscaping has also occurred, with a beautiful waterfall replacing the once prominent reflection ponds, originally home to small fish and water lilies.

A Scenic Location

Situated right along the Snake River, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple benefits from its incredible surroundings, with cascading waters enhancing its charm. This prime location has made it a beautiful spot for all to appreciate while exploring the rich culture and history of Idaho Falls.

Looking Back and Ahead

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple has a compelling history, from its initial dedication through various renovations to its current state. The presentation of the endowment, once performed through live acting, reflects a tradition now imbued with more contemporary practices, yet still rooted in deep-seated beliefs.
