A Journey Through Time
The journey to the Temple’s completion began with the groundbreaking ceremony on December 19, 1938, officiated by Elder David Smith. A significant milestone occurred on October 19, 1940, when the Temple was dedicated by the Prophet David O. McKay.
A Testament to Resilience
The original construction faced challenges, notably during World War II, which delayed the completion of the interior works by an additional four years. Finally, the exterior was completed in 1941, unveiling a beautiful architectural design inspired by a vision of the ancient Nephite Temple.
Notable Features
Spanning 85,624 square feet and reaching a height of 156 feet, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple features an impressive central spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, a hallmark of its architectural splendor. Built on 8.28 acres, this Temple includes four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry, allowing for a variety of sacred experiences.
The design also incorporated local materials, as notable lava rock was discovered during excavation and used for the basement walls. The Temple’s exterior is characterized by reinforced concrete, accented with white cement from aggregate cast stone that forms 16-inch thick walls.

The most recent public open house took place from April 22 through May 20, 2017, following a comprehensive renovation. A second exit from the Bride and Grooms room, a large waiting area for weddings, and numerous electrical upgrades were among the improvements made during this two-year renovation. The rededication ceremony on June 4, 2017, was performed by Apostle Henry B. Eyring, marking a new chapter in the Temple’s history.
Historical Significance
This Temple is particularly noteworthy as the first built in Idaho and the only Temple dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. It stands out as the first Temple with a central spire, enhancing its unique position within the overall network of Temples.

Historically, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple featured three reflection ponds filled with fish and water lilies during the 1960s, which later transitioned into flowerbeds. A significant landscaping renovation in 2011 introduced a stunning waterfall feature that complements the Temple’s appeal.
Additionally, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is one of only seven Temples where patrons traverse through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room. This design is shared only with the Manti Utah Temple, Laie Hawaii Temple, Cardston Alberta Temple, Mesa Arizona Temple, Los Angeles California Temple, and Nauvoo Illinois Temple.
