A Journey Through Time
The groundbreaking for the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple took place on December 19, 1938, led by Elder David Smith, marking the beginning of a monumental journey. The site was officially dedicated on October 19, 1940, by the Prophet David O. McKay, further solidifying its role in the lives of many.
The Temple was originally named the Idaho Falls Temple and was notable for being the first built in Idaho. It also holds the distinction of being dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith, placing it among the more unique spiritual sites.
Architectural Marvel
Occupying 8.28 acres along the scenic banks of the Snake River, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple boasts remarkable architectural features. The exterior is finished with reinforced concrete, layered with 16-inch thick walls and two-inch thick slabs made from a specialized white cement aggregate. Its impressive height stretches to 156 feet, crowned with a gold-leafed statue of Angel Moroni atop a centrally placed spire. This design was inspired by the ancient Nephite Temple, melding sacred tradition with modern construction techniques.
Inside, the Temple spans 85,624 square feet and contains four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, catering to various ceremonial needs. Notably, the interior underwent extensive renovations, culminating in a rededication on June 4, 2017, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring after two years of careful upgrades. These improvements included additions such as an extra exit for the Bridal Room and a newly designed waiting area for wedding guests.
Historical Significance
The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple was notable for its presentation of the endowment, which featured live acting. This meant that visitors could engage with the experience in a unique way. Additionally, during the 1960s, the surrounding landscape included three serene reflection ponds, home to small fish and water lilies. These have since been transformed into beautiful flowerbeds, with a stunning waterfall feature introduced in a major landscaping renovation completed in 2011.
An interesting aspect of the Temple’s construction is that while excavating the site, builders discovered large lava rock. This was skillfully utilized for the basement walls, marrying natural elements with human craftsmanship.
A Unique Experience
The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple is one of only seven Temples where patrons can progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room. It stands proudly alongside other notable Temples including those in Manti, Laie, Cardston, Mesa, Los Angeles, and Nauvoo.
In a unique installation, the gold-leafed Angel Moroni was placed atop the Temple by helicopter on September 5, 1983, a sight that surely captivated all those who witnessed it.
