Located on the banks of the picturesque Snake River, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple stands as a notable part of the region’s landscape. Situated at 1000 Memorial Dr, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402, this sacred site has a rich history and compelling architectural features that draw attention from many.

Historical Timeline

The journey of the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple began on March 3, 1937, when the announcement was made. Ground was broken on December 19, 1938, by Elder David Smith, leading to a period of anticipation. The dedication of the site took place on October 19, 1940, led by Prophet David O. McKay.

One significant public open house occurred from April 22 through May 20, 2017, offering insight into the most recent renovations completed over two years, culminating in a rededication ceremony by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017. Enhancements during this renovation included an additional exit for the Bride and Groom’s room, a spacious waiting area, and upgraded electrical systems.

Architectural Marvel

Covering 85,624 square feet, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple features an exterior made of reinforced concrete and white cement. Its impressive 156-foot height is crowned by a central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. The design is inspired by visions of ancient Nephite Temples, incorporating unique architectural elements that capture the imagination.

Inside, the Temple offers four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, facilitating various sacred activities. Notably, it is one of only seven Temples where individuals progress through four ordinance rooms before entering the Celestial Room.

Renovations and Changes

Originally known as the Idaho Falls Temple, this site underwent significant landscape changes. The reflection ponds of the 1960s, complete with fish and water lilies, were transformed into flowerbeds, and a major landscaping renovation in 2011 introduced a striking waterfall feature.

During the construction phase in 1941, excavators discovered large lava rock, which was utilized for the basement walls. While the exterior was completed in 1941, internal work extended due to World War II, pushing completion to an additional four years.

Furthermore, on September 5, 1983, the striking gold-leafed Angel Moroni was installed atop the Temple via helicopter, further enhancing its majestic profile.

A Commitment to Heritage

The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple holds a special place in history as the first Temple built in Idaho and the only one dedicated by Prophet George Albert Smith. Its architectural innovations, along with the serene landscaping surrounding it, create an inviting atmosphere for both local residents and those exploring the history of the region.

In every aspect—from its construction to the meaningful enhancements made over the years—the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple reflects a commitment to heritage and tradition, making it a significant site in Idaho’s cultural tapestry. Whether you are admiring its exterior or contemplating the history behind its walls, this Temple offers a unique glimpse into an enduring legacy.
