Discovering the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple, now operational as the 179th dedicated Temple, is a significant addition to the landscape of Utah. Located at 987 South Ensign Drive in Saratoga Springs, Utah, this remarkable destination represents both spiritual significance and architectural beauty.

Announced during General Conference on April 2, 2017, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson, the Temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication took place on October 19, 2018. Craig C. Christensen, who conducted the ceremony, shared the hope that this Temple would bless many individuals and families with sacred covenants, emphasizing a protective space for children and families amid worldly challenges.

After a public open house that ran from April 15 through July 8, 2023, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple was dedicated by Apostle Henry B. Eyring on August 13, 2023. Covering 22.71 acres, the Temple shares its parking lot with a newly constructed meetinghouse.

The exterior is finished with beige precast concrete panels that are eight inches thick, complemented by a spire made from glass fiber reinforced concrete. A unique decorative band wraps around the building, featuring mountain designs and metal panels that pay homage to Utah Lake wetlands and the snowy egret, a logo of Saratoga Springs City.

Inside, the art glass stained windows draw inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, reflecting elements of nature through a palette that includes purples, blues, greens, and golds—an artistic nod to the colors found in Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains.

Set atop a bluff, the Temple offers breathtaking views of Utah Lake and the surrounding Wasatch Front. The landscaped area features local plant species chosen for both sustainability and natural beauty, with the plaza area facing east, overlooking the valley and nestled among evergreens and mountain shrubs.

Architecturally striking, the Temple boasts a single attached central spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The building encompasses 87,836 square feet, standing at an impressive height of 199 feet 9 inches and situated at an elevation of 4,652 feet. It is the eighteenth Temple completed in Utah and the fifth in Utah County, joining the ranks of the Provo Utah Rock Canyon Temple, Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, Payson Utah Temple, and Provo City Center Temple.

Saratoga Springs is a relatively new community, incorporated in 1997 and located on the west side of Utah Lake in Northern Utah County. The Temple was officially released to the public on September 5, 2019.

Inside, the flooring features a mix of carpet, porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile, and stone, with on-site carved patterns throughout. The restroom floors showcase “rug-like” tile patterns, while the baptistry features a font adorned with TREND Mosaic Brillante glass tiles in various hues of blues, whites, creams, and purples.

In the design, stylized flowers such as irises, daisies, and chrysanthemums echo the wildflowers of the area, while wave-like lines evoke images of the nearby waters of the Wasatch Mountain Range and Utah Lake. The main level art glass in the baptistry depicts snowy egrets in wetlands, reflecting the city logo, with additional representations of Utah Lake in the wave patterns at the bottom.

The brides room features elegant decorative light fixtures, specifically a Schonbek light fixture, while the baptistry’s font railings are crafted from antique brass, Sapele African mahogany, and glass. The decorative hardware captures architectural details found throughout the Temple, blending designs from the grass and wetland patterns with the water motifs.

The ceilings typically feature painted gypsum, with stepped designs enhancing the architectural elegance. Custom ceiling medallions showcase floral and foliage embellishments that contribute to the overall aesthetic. Additionally, the Temple is adorned with noteworthy artwork including “Evening Flight” by Adair Payne, “Evening, Distant Mountain” by Brad Aldridge, “Timpanogos Sunrise and Jordan River Sunrise” by Ken Stockton, and the striking “Timpanogos from Across the Lake” by Bruce Brainard.

The Saratoga Springs Utah Temple is not just a destination for the faithful but also an architectural marvel that celebrates the beauty of its surroundings and the community it serves.
