A Brief History
Announced on November 15, 1968, the Washington D.C. Temple had its groundbreaking ceremony and site dedication a few weeks later on December 7, 1968, officiated by Hugh B. Brown. The first public open house ran from September 17 to November 2, 1974, attracting an astonishing 758,328 guests. This marked a significant moment in its history as people eagerly toured the new build.
The Temple was officially dedicated from November 19 to November 22, 1974, by the Prophet Spencer W. Kimball. After years of dedication and care, a second dedication took place on August 14, 2022, led by Prophet Russell M. Nelson, signifying its ongoing importance.

The Washington D.C. Temple is built on an expansive 52 acres and covers a total area of 156,558 square feet. At a height of 288 feet, it holds the distinction of being the tallest Temple in the Church.
Notably, the Temple’s exterior finish is made from 173,000 square feet of Alabama White Marble, presenting a stunning aesthetic that adds to its grandeur. It is equipped with six instruction rooms, ten sealing rooms, and one baptistry, making it one of only four temples to feature six instruction rooms, with the only other examples located outside of Utah.
