Taylorsville Utah Temple: A New Chapter in Architecture and Heritage

Nestled in Taylorsville, Utah, the Taylorsville Utah Temple stands as the 192nd dedicated Temple in operation. This remarkable addition to the region was announced on December 11, 2019, and its groundbreaking took place on October 31, 2020, led by Apostle Gerrit W. Gong. The Temple was constructed atop an existing meetinghouse and recreational field, blending seamlessly with the community’s history.

Architectural Elegance

The exterior of the Taylorsville Utah Temple showcases a stunning architectural style known as pioneer-era Gothic. Featuring structural steel and stone cladding, the design draws inspiration from local pioneer tabernacles. The exterior art glass highlights stylized versions of local wildflowers, such as the bird’s-foot trefoil and “red beauty” bergenia, set against a rich color palette of deep burgundy, lavender, and gold, reflective of both Gothic architecture and the natural hues found on the west side of the valley.

• Size and Layout: The Temple spans 73,492 square feet and rises to a height of 219.9 feet, occupying a 7.5-acre site at an elevation of 4,335 feet.
• Interior Spaces: It includes four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry, providing essential spaces for various functions.
• Parking: A two-level parking garage ensures ample space for those attending events.

Landscaping and Environment

The landscaping around the Taylorsville Utah Temple is thoughtfully designed, consisting of annuals, shrub beds, and turf areas complemented by evergreen and deciduous trees. Approximately half of the landscape is planted over structural components, which requires innovative planting techniques. The use of drought-tolerant plants and a smart-controlled drip irrigation system reflects a commitment to water conservation and sustainability.

Fencing and Ground Features

• Fencing: Ornamental aluminum runs along the north and west property lines, while precast concrete panels outline the south and east property lines.
• Paving: The Belgard Mega-Tandem retaining wall system curves gracefully around the Temple, and Belgard concrete pavers have been used to create decorative pathways inspired by the building’s architecture.

Interior Design and Finishes

Inside, the Taylorsville Utah Temple harmonizes beauty with functionality. The flooring features a mix of carpets, area rugs, stone, and tile, while the general areas are accented by broadloom carpets in soft gold and lavender tones. The sealing rooms feature elegant white carved carpets, and the celestial room and veil corridors are adorned with nylon rugs.

Art and Lighting

• Stone and Decorative Features: The interior stone is Perlatino from Italy, coupled with various stone accents. The aesthetic is enhanced with light, simple designs that underscore the Temple’s architectural significance.
• Lighting: All light fixtures are crafted from acrylic and cast bronze, ensuring a warm and inviting glow throughout the interior.

Decorative Elements

Custom-designed vinyl wall coverings, various paint shades by Sherwin-Williams, and a balance of painted gypsum board and wall coverings enhance the overall ambiance. Many rooms feature unique wood columns and pilasters, contributing to the Temple’s refined look.

The Taylorsville Utah Temple is not only the first Temple in Taylorsville, but it also marks the fifth Temple built in Salt Lake Valley. The dedication took place on June 2, 2024, celebrating a momentous occasion for those who cherish its purpose.

Following a public open house from April 13, 2024, through May 18, 2024, where over 265,000 individuals toured the interior, the Temple has already made a significant impact. As the twenty-first Temple constructed in Utah, it stands as a testament to modern design intertwined with deep-rooted heritage, reflecting the values and history of the area’s residents.
