Earth View of the Hamburg Germany Temple
The Hamburg Germany Temple is an exciting new addition to the spiritual landscape of Germany. Announced on April 2, 2023, by President Russell M. Nelson during the April General Conference, this will be the third House of the Lord built in the nation. This significant development comes as Hamburg, located about 175 miles northwest of Berlin, is set to welcome a dedicated place for sacred activities.
A Historic Milestone
With a site area of 1.4 acres, the Hamburg Germany Temple will serve as an important location for the nearly 40,000 Latter-day Saints residing in approximately 150 wards and branches in Germany. The temple will be the first built since the reunification of the country, marking a notable moment in its history. The previously established Freiberg Germany Temple was dedicated in East Germany, while the Frankfurt Germany Temple is situated in West Germany.
The Vision for the Temple
Though the official rendering of the Hamburg Germany Temple has not yet been publicized, it has been shared that the exterior will feature a beautiful granite finish. Sitting at an elevation of 26 feet, this new construction aims to provide a serene space for individuals to engage in sacred commitments and enhance their spiritual journeys.
Historical Context
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a rich history in Germany. The first known convert, Jacob Zundel, joined in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836. Following this, short-lived efforts to spread the faith occurred until George P. Dykes arrived in 1851. He is believed to have baptized the first two converts in Germany on September 15 of that year. Additionally, Elder John Taylor facilitated the translation of the Book of Mormon into German, which was published in May 1852.
