The Tijuana Mexico Temple serves as the 149th operating Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located at Paseo Del Rio 6832 Esquina Campestre Oriente Col 3 RA Etapa Rio Tijuana 22226 in Baja California, this remarkable construction stands as a testament to faith and dedication.
Announcement and Groundbreaking
On October 2, 2010, the Temple was announced by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson during General Conference. Approximately two years later, on August 18, 2012, the Temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication took place. This significant event was presided over by Benjamin De Hoyos, drawing around 2,000 attendees who came to witness this momentous occasion.
Public Open House
The public open house of the Tijuana Mexico Temple ran from October 13 to October 28, 2015, attracting an impressive 70,000 guests. This period allowed many to explore the beautiful interiors and appreciate the thoughtful design.
Dedication and Features
The Tijuana Mexico Temple was officially dedicated on December 13, 2015, by Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf. His dedication prayer included heartfelt sentiments, stating, “As we approach Thee in prayer, O God our Eternal Father, we lift our voices in thanksgiving and love on this historic day to dedicate the Tijuana Mexico Temple unto Thee.” He expressed that the Temple represents an answer to the prayers of believers and a fulfillment of divine promises.
Architectural Details
Built on 9.4 acres, the Temple encompasses 33,367 square feet and rises to a height of 151 feet. Its exterior features precast concrete cladding, incorporating frosted gold and clear glass, which is beautifully accented with green terracotta. A carefully designed fountain of precast concrete, adorned with local cantera stone and Mexican hand-painted tiles, enhances the hacienda architectural style.
Interior Elements
Inside, the Tijuana Mexico Temple showcases a wealth of luxurious features. The marble staircases, wrought iron railings, and exquisite dark wooden doors create an inviting atmosphere. Colorful patterned tiles and stone floors complement the carved and textured glass, while crystal chandeliers illuminate the interior spaces.
Artwork and Design Details
The artwork throughout the Temple, including murals in the instruction rooms, brings the region’s desert and coastal landscapes indoors. The interior is further enhanced with rugs featuring Spanish colonial patterns and colors. The stone floors are crafted from materials sourced from China, Spain, and Italy, while mahogany doors with bronze hardware add elegance. Notably, the bronze railings incorporate beautiful Bougainvillea motifs in the decorative painting and flooring, echoing the window designs and landscaping.
