A Brief History
Announcement and Groundbreaking
The journey toward the Tijuana Mexico Temple began with an announcement on October 2, 2010, by the Prophet Thomas S. Monson during General Conference. This significant event marked the start of a much-anticipated endeavor for the local members. The Temple’s groundbreaking and site dedication took place on August 18, 2012, led by Benjamin De Hoyos, with around 2,000 attendees present for this historic moment.
Open House and Dedication
The public open house ran from October 13th to 28th in 2015, during which approximately 70,000 individuals toured the Temple. This occasion set the stage for the official dedication, which occurred on December 13, 2015. Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf dedicated the Temple, expressing heartfelt appreciation with the words: “As we approach Thee in prayer, O God our Eternal Father, we lift our voices in thanksgiving and love on this historic day to dedicate the Tijuana Mexico Temple unto Thee…”

Size and Design
Covering 9.4 acres with an impressive footprint of 33,367 square feet, the Tijuana Mexico Temple stands 151 feet tall, sitting at an elevation of 172 feet. The exterior features a unique precast concrete cladding, complemented by a mixture of frosted gold and beautifully carved and textured clear glass. Green terracotta accents contribute to the overall aesthetic.
Interior Features
Inside, the Temple showcases a stunning array of materials. Marble staircases, wrought iron railings, and dark wooden doors create an elegant atmosphere. Colorful patterned tiles and stone floors combine to enhance the overall design. The interior also boasts original artwork, including murals in the instruction rooms, showcasing the region’s desert and coastal landscapes.
Unique Touches
Distinctive elements such as rugs painted with Spanish colonial patterns, stone sourced from China, Spain, and Italy, and mahogany doors with bronze hardware add an extra layer of richness to the Temple’s design. The Bougainvillea flower motif features prominently in decorative paintings, harmoniously connecting the interior aesthetics with the landscaping outside.
