Anticipating the Salt Lake Temple Open House
The Salt Lake Temple, a cherished House of the Lord for many, is preparing for its much-anticipated open house, set to take place from April 5, 2027, through October 1, 2027. This significant event will mark the first time in over 130 years that the public can access this iconic House of the Lord, which closed on January 1, 2020, for substantial renovations and seismic upgrades.
Temple Square Construction
The ongoing renovations aim to enhance the functionality and safety of the Temple while preserving its historic beauty. The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year, allowing for a grand reopening that could attract between 3 million to 5 million attendees over the six-month open house period. With an average of 20,000 to 29,000 people expected to visit each day, careful planning is being implemented to ensure a smooth experience for everyone.
In Collaboration with the City
To accommodate the anticipated influx of individuals, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is working closely with the city of Salt Lake City. Plans include managing crowd control effectively while allowing guests to explore the magnificence of the House of the Lord. This collaboration guarantees that attendees can appreciate the various features and enhancements made during the renovations.
Transportation and Accessibility
To facilitate easy access to the House of the Lord, the church will offer an app in late August or early September for booking tour times. Ticket holders can travel downtown using UTA services, including TRAX and Frontrunner. Additionally, a secure park-and-ride lot will be available at South Temple and Redwood Road, complete with a shuttle service to Temple Square. Church employees will also receive free UTA passes during the event to help ease downtown traffic.
The Tour Experience
Visitors will embark on their tour at the Conference Center, situated just north of Temple Square. The route will take them underground to the House of the Lord, with the entire experience lasting 60 to 80 minutes. The church plans to enlist special missionaries to serve as guides throughout the open house period, offering a unique insight into the history and features of the Temple.
A Comprehensive Experience
Once individuals enter the perimeter of the House of the Lord, they will have the opportunity to explore Temple Square and its newly installed statues, along with various other church buildings. Attendees can expect the experience to last several hours, providing ample time to appreciate the rich history and spiritual significance of the Temple.
Looking Forward
The Salt Lake Temple open house is poised to be a monumental event, blending tradition with modern upgrades in a way that has not been experienced for generations. With careful planning, this highly anticipated occasion promises to create lasting memories for all who attend.
