The St. Louis Missouri Temple stands as the 50th dedicated Temple in operation. Its address is 12555 N Outer Forty Dr, St. Louis, Missouri 63141. This remarkable site has a rich history that traces back to its public announcement by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley on October 29, 1990.
Groundbreaking and Construction
The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on October 30, 1993, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, with an impressive turnout of 5,000 attendees. Constructed on 14 acres, this three-story Temple spans 58,749 square feet and rises to a height of 150 feet, sitting at an elevation of 581 feet.
Architectural Features
The exterior finish of the St. Louis Missouri Temple features cast stone and Bethal white granite with a beautiful thermal finish. Architectural highlights include a single attached end spire, topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue, that beautifully reflects the craftsmanship applied in its design.
Interior Layout
Inside, the Temple is equipped with four instruction rooms, four sealing rooms, and one baptistry. These facilities play an important role in the diverse functions this space accommodates.
Public Engagement with the Temple
A public open house was held from April 26 to May 24, 1997, attracting a remarkable total of 260,000 attendees. This initiative fostered an appreciation for the Temple and its significance within the wider context of St. Louis and beyond.
Dedication and Recognition
The dedication of the St. Louis Missouri Temple took place over five days, from June 1 to June 5, 1997, also officiated by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Notably, this Temple is the first of its kind to be built in the city of St. Louis, as well as the first in St. Louis County and the state of Missouri, marking a significant milestone for the area.

Interestingly, while the St. Louis Missouri Temple is the first built in the state, earlier dedicated temple sites were established in the 1830s in regions like Independence, Far West, and Adam-ondi-Ahman.

A notable excerpt from the dedicatory prayer reflects on the history of Missouri: “We are reminded that this Temple stands on the soil of the state of Missouri, where the Prophet and his associates suffered so much and were finally banished by a cruel and illegal order of extermination. Terrible were their losses, terrible their suffering. We are grateful that the extermination order has been revoked and the persecution is long since gone. Today Thy Church basks in the sunlight of goodwill. Hundreds of thousands have come to view this, Thy holy house. They have left with respect and appreciation.”
