The Architectural Fascination of PluralSingularCity’s Tallahassee Florida Temple: What You Need to Know

The Tallahassee Florida Temple: A New Chapter for the Capital City

The Tallahassee Florida Temple, an important development for the area, was announced on April 5, 2020, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson. This significant addition to the Florida landscape has garnered attention for its unique design and local features.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on June 5, 2021, led by James B. Martino. The official open house ran from November 4 to November 23, 2024. It attracted an impressive 40,976 people, surpassing the expected 25,000. The dedication ceremony, marking its official opening, occurred on December 8, 2024, with Apostle Patrick Kearon presiding.

Design and Architecture

Occupying 4.97 acres, the Tallahassee Florida Temple is a single-story building boasting a total area of 29,355 square feet. Its exterior is finished with precast concrete panels, complemented by a single attached central tower that reaches a height of 125 feet, including the spire. The elevation stands at 204 feet, providing a striking presence in the community.

The interior of the Tallahassee Florida Temple features multiple specialized rooms, including two sealing rooms, a baptistry, and two instruction rooms. The design emphasizes local artistry, with an exterior glass motif capturing the beauty of the magnolia flower. The Celestial Room includes a stunning arched glass transom adorned with a radial glass pattern centered on a magnolia flower design and bordered with carved gold vines.

Unique Artwork

The Temple showcases a range of original artwork that resonates with the local environment and Christian themes. Among the notable pieces is a large canvas by artist Josh Clare depicting the serene landscape of Florida’s marshlands and cypress trees. Another significant work is “She Offered All, Even All Her Living” by Heather Edwards, illustrating a poignant Biblical narrative. This emotional painting conveys the story of a widow offering her last resources while surrounded by her small children, blending sadness with a profound love for God.

Lighting and Fixtures

The interior features distinctive light fixtures designed in the style of the mid-1800s, primarily crafted from bronze finished to resemble brass. In the baptistry, the light fixtures exhibit a carved magnolia rosette, while the ordinance rooms boast lantern-style fixtures adorned with floral accents. The Celestial and sealing rooms incorporate chandeliers embellished with cut crystals, further enhancing the interior ambiance.

Historical Context

The construction of the Tallahassee Florida Temple represents a pivotal moment for both the city and the state. At the time of its announcement, it became the third Temple built in Florida, following the Orlando Florida Temple inaugurated in 1994 and the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple established in 2014. This Temple marked the first built in Tallahassee and the first in Leon County.

Community Impact

When it was dedicated, the Tallahassee Florida Temple became the westernmost house of the Lord in Florida. Its establishment occurred within a district that included eight stakes, covering areas in northern Florida, southern Georgia, and even extending into Alabama. Florida was home to over 172,000 Latter-day Saints, representing nearly 275 congregations at the time of the dedication.

The dedication of the Tallahassee Florida Temple was the 16th Temple of 2024 and notably the last one dedicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this year. This addition not only enhances the spiritual landscape of Tallahassee but also serves as a new chapter for its residents.
