Discovering the Columbus Ohio Temple
Nestled at 3870 Gateway Blvd, Columbus, Ohio 43228, the Columbus Ohio Temple stands as a serene presence in the heart of the city. As the 60th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it embodies both architectural beauty and spiritual significance.
A Brief History
The journey of the Columbus Ohio Temple began on April 25, 1998, when it was officially announced. Just a few months later, on September 12 of the same year, Elder John K. Carmack conducted the groundbreaking and site dedication, marking the start of an exciting chapter for this central Ohio location.
Fast forward to the public open house that took place from April 29 through May 13, 2023, where the community experienced the beauty and peace of this unique space. The culmination of this journey occurred on June 4, 2023, when Apostle M. Russell Ballard officiated the rededication ceremony.
Architectural Wonders
Covering 11,745 square feet, the Columbus Ohio Temple is an architectural marvel, featuring a striking exterior finish of white Spanish marble and granite sourced from Spain. Its height reaches an impressive 77 feet, and it sits at an elevation of 858 feet, providing a vantage point that enhances its presence against the Columbus skyline.
A defining feature of the Temple is its single attached spire, crowned with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. This emblematic figure was reinstalled on December 9, 2021, now facing southwest, overseeing the entrance and adding to the visual grace of the Temple.
Inside the Temple
The interior offers a tranquil atmosphere with its beige and gold stone, creating a warm environment for reflection and learning. It contains two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, each designed to facilitate sacred practices.
Additionally, stained glass windows depicting pink magnolia blossoms reflect the abundance of these beautiful flowers found throughout the Temple grounds. This visual floral representation enhances the already breathtaking scenery.
Surroundings & Landscape
Spanning five acres, the grounds of the Columbus Ohio Temple are meticulously landscaped with a diverse collection of flora, including boxwood, juniper, magnolias, red sunset maple, and eastern redbud trees. The thoughtfully arranged gardens not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal but also create a peaceful ambiance for contemplation.
The Temple is located only 150 miles south of Kirtland, Ohio, and is the second Temple built in the state, enriching the spiritual landscape of the region. An additional meetinghouse is conveniently situated in the same parking lot, further fostering connections among members.
