Discovering the Columbus Ohio Temple

Nestled in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, the Columbus Ohio Temple stands as the 60th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With its striking white Spanish marble and granite exterior, this beautiful location is a must-see for anyone interested in architecture and spirituality alike.

A Brief History

The journey to the Columbus Ohio Temple began when it was announced on April 25, 1998. Shortly afterward, on September 12 of that same year, a groundbreaking ceremony was held, dedicated by Elder John K. Carmack. The Temple opened its doors to the public for a special open house from April 29 through May 13, 2023, allowing people to explore its beauty and significance. Culminating in a rededication ceremony on June 4, 2023, conducted by Apostle M. Russell Ballard, this place has drawn in many admirers.

Design and Features

Covering an impressive 11,745 square feet and rising to 77 feet, the Columbus Ohio Temple sits at an elevation of 858 feet on 5 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Its architectural design includes a single, attached spire crowned with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni, which was reinstalled on December 9, 2021. This statue now faces southwest, directing its gaze toward the entrance.

Aesthetic Elements

The interior, adorned with beige and gold stone, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Notable stained glass windows featuring pink magnolia blossoms are a highlight, reflecting the flora surrounding the Temple grounds. These blossoms are complemented by a variety of well-maintained plants, including boxwood, juniper, red sunset maple, and Eastern redbud trees.

Facilities

Inside the Columbus Ohio Temple, you’ll find two instructional rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, providing a suite of amenities for those who seek spiritual growth and connection within its walls. The Temple is complemented by a meetinghouse conveniently located in the same parking lot, adding to the space’s purpose.

Location and Significance

Situated approximately 150 miles south of Kirtland, Ohio, the Columbus Ohio Temple marks the second such place built in the state. Its dedication to intricately planned architecture and serene natural beauty makes it not only an important site for its religious community but also a treasure for the city of Columbus itself.
