Discovering the Columbus Ohio Temple: A Testament of Faith and Architecture

Nestled in Columbus, Ohio, the Columbus Ohio Temple stands as the 60th dedicated Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Located at 3870 Gateway Blvd, this remarkable place has a rich history and stunning architectural features that draw attention from locals and beyond.

The Journey to Dedication

The path to the Columbus Ohio Temple began on April 25, 1998, when the announcement of its construction was made. Just a few months later, on September 12, 1998, Elder John K. Carmack conducted the groundbreaking and site dedication, marking a significant moment in the journey toward its completion.

After years of anticipation, the public was invited to explore the beautifully designed space during the open house held from April 29 to May 13, 2023. This event allowed attendees to get a glimpse of the intricate details that define the Temple. The culmination of this journey was celebrated with rededication on June 4, 2023, conducted by Apostle M. Russell Ballard.

Architectural Elegance

The Columbus Ohio Temple is built on five acres and features a striking exterior finish of white Spanish marble and granite sourced directly from Spain. Its architectural highlight includes a single spire adorned with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni, a significant figure in Latter-day Saint theology.

Inside, the space encompasses 11,745 square feet, featuring two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The interior is elegantly designed, with the stone color reflecting shades of beige and gold, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Natural Beauty Surrounding the Temple

The exterior is complemented by the surrounding landscape, which includes an array of flora such as boxwood, juniper, magnolias, red sunset maple, and eastern redbud plants and trees. The stained glass windows showcase pink magnolia blossoms, mirroring the beauty of nature that flourishes around the Temple grounds.

Significant Features

Perched at an elevation of 858 feet, the Columbus Ohio Temple stands proudly at a height of 77 feet. It is also noteworthy that this Temple is situated 150 miles south of Kirtland, Ohio, marking its importance in the state. Moreover, a meetinghouse is conveniently located in the same parking lot, enhancing the accessibility of various activities.

An interesting aspect of the Temple’s history is the reinstallation of the angel Moroni on December 9, 2021. Previously facing east, the statue now gazes southwest over the Temple entrance, symbolizing a new chapter in its history.

A Unique Presence in Ohio

As the second Temple built in Ohio, the Columbus Ohio Temple contributes to the fabric of the area. Its design, history, and the serenity it offers create a space for reflection and connection for many individuals seeking inspiration in their spiritual lives. Whether it’s the stunning architecture or the beautiful landscape, the Temple presents a unique presence that enriches the community.

The Columbus Ohio Temple continues to be a significant marker of faith and commitment for many, uniting people through shared values and beliefs while standing as an enduring testament to divine inspiration and architectural beauty.
