Elko Nevada Temple A Spiritual Haven

LDS Temple News Presents Elko Nevada Temple

The Elko Nevada Temple, the 209th dedicated temple in operation, represents a significant addition to the region’s landscape. Sitting majestically at 2102 Ruby Vista Dr, Elko, NV 89801, this House of the Lord serves not only as a spiritual center but also as an architectural wonder.

Announcement and Dedication

The journey of the Elko Nevada Temple began when the Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced its construction on April 4, 2021, during a General Conference. Following this announcement, the groundbreaking and dedication of the House of the Lord took place on May 7, 2022, led by Paul B. Pieper. The public was invited to an open house from August 30, 2025, through September 13, 2025, where a remarkable number of attendees explored the interior. Finally, the temple was dedicated on October 12, 2025, by Apostle Gary E. Stevenson, who offered a prayer asking for the House of the Lord to be a beacon of light and peace.

Architectural Features

This House of the Lord encompasses an area of 12,901 square feet and is elegantly crafted with White Mount Airy Granite stone veneer on its exterior. Rising to a height of 108.10 feet and sitting at an elevation of 5,133 feet, it is the first temple built in the city of Elko and the first in Elko County. Notably, it is also the third temple in the state of Nevada.

The architectural design is highlighted by a single attached end spire, devoid of a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Its interior features include one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry, ensuring that all essential functions are encompassed within its walls.

Artistic Contributions

The artistry within the Elko Nevada Temple is equally impressive. The exterior art glass incorporates a floral motif featuring the desert globemallow, a native plant that harmonizes with the local landscape. The vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and green reflect the high-desert environment surrounding Elko. Additionally, geometric patterns inspired by the Paiute and Shoshone tribes have been integrated into the design.

Inside, several notable artists have contributed to a fine art collection, which includes three significant landscape paintings: “Lamoille Canyon” by Michael Coleman, “Elko Landscape” by David Dibble, and “Autumn Sun — Ruby Mountains” by Louis Heinzman. Other sacred art pieces include works by Michael Malm, Albin Veselka, and Jeff Hein, which adorn the temple’s interiors.

Interior Details

The interior of the Elko Nevada Temple exudes elegance with its brass frosted glass light fixtures, complemented by sapele wood interior doors and brass hardware. The exterior doors are also finished in brass, and the railings surrounding the baptismal font feature the same luxurious material.

As the northernmost temple in Nevada, this House of the Lord serves a vast district that spans six counties, covering approximately 46.5% of the state’s area or 51,389 square miles.

Historical Significance

The dedication of the Elko Nevada Temple marks an important moment in history, as it is the first time since 1888 that a House of the Lord has been dedicated during a period of apostolic interregnum. At that time, President Wilford Woodruff was presiding over the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during the dedication of the Manti Utah Temple.

In summary, the Elko Nevada Temple stands as a remarkable achievement that honors the heritage of the area while offering a space for reflection and connection. Its unique architectural features and stunning artwork reflect both the natural beauty of Northern Nevada and the rich cultural influences of the region. As the city of Elko embraces this new House of the Lord, its significance will undoubtedly grow in the years to come.
