The temple was announced to the public on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during General Conference. This much-anticipated announcement was met with enthusiasm, marking a new chapter for this community. The groundbreaking and dedication of the House of the Lord occurred on May 7, 2022, by Paul B. Pieper, further cementing the commitment to establish a sacred space for the area.

Public Open House and Dedication

A public open house was held from August 30, 2025, through September 13, 2025, allowing individuals to explore the interior before its formal dedication. The Elko Nevada Temple was dedicated on October 12, 2025, by Apostle Gary E. Stevenson, who offered a dedicatory prayer that included a heartfelt desire for the House of the Lord to be “a symbol of light and peace and a strength for all eyes that fall upon it.”

Notable Features

The Elko Nevada Temple is situated on 5.2 acres and features a striking White Mount Airy Granite stone veneer on its exterior. This House of the Lord reaches an impressive height of 108.10 feet, while its total area encompasses 12,901 square feet. The architectural design includes a single attached end spire, though it does not feature a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue.

The interior of the Elko Nevada Temple showcases several key elements:

  • Rooms: It houses one instruction room, one sealing room, and one baptistry.
  • Artistic Contributions: Several notable artists have contributed original paintings and artworks for the interior. Featured pieces include “Lamoille Canyon” by Michael Coleman, “Elko Landscape” by David Dibble, and “Autumn Sun — Ruby Mountains” by Louis Heinzman. Additionally, works by Michael Malm and Albin Veselka enrich the environment with spiritual significance.
  • Design Elements: The art glass incorporates motifs of desert globemallow and geometric patterns inspired by the Paiute and Shoshone tribes. The vibrant color palette reflects the natural beauty of the surrounding high-desert landscapes.

Architectural Details

The interior finish includes brass frosted glass light fixtures and doors crafted from sapele wood, with brass hardware completing the elegant aesthetic. The railings around the baptismal font are also made of brass, ensuring a consistent theme throughout the House of the Lord.

Importance in the Region

Once dedicated, the Elko Nevada Temple became the northernmost temple in Nevada, marking a milestone in its location. The district assigned to this temple encompasses six large counties, covering approximately 46.5% of the state’s area, which totals 51,389 square miles. This dedication also holds historical significance, as it marked the first time since 1888 that a House of the Lord was dedicated during a period of apostolic interregnum. At that time, President Wilford Woodruff presided over the dedication of the Manti Utah Temple.

The Elko Nevada Temple represents not only a spiritual landmark but also a commitment to uplifting the local area and its residents with a dedicated House of the Lord. Its architectural beauty and historical significance ensure that it will be a cherished place for many years to come.
