Fairbanks Alaska Temple sits on a lovely 7. 7.59- acre area and features a charming central spire. It includes a welcoming instruction room, a serene sealing room, and a peaceful baptistry, covering a cozy 10, 10,000 square feet. The temple stands proudly at an elevation of 445 feet. Elder Peter M. Johnson, the caring First Counselor in the North America West Area Presidency, will graciously preside over the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Plans for the new temple project include a warm, inviting 10, 000- square- foot temple, a friendly meetinghouse, and a helpful auxiliary building on the Geist Road site. The first congregation in Alaska was warmly established in July 1938, and today, about 34, 000 Latter- day Saints joyfully serve across over 80 vibrant congregations throughout the state.
On November 25, 2024, we were excited to see the official exterior rendering of the Fairbanks, Alaska Temple revealed to the public. On this special day, the site was officially designated as a beautiful 7. 59- acre parcel along Geist Road in Fairbanks, and plans were shared for a charming, single- story temple of around 10, 000 square feet, complemented by a welcoming meetinghouse and an auxiliary facility.
On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson shared inspiring plans to build the Fairbanks, Alaska Temple during the October 2023 General Conference. This will be the second temple in Alaska, following the beloved Anchorage Alaska Temple. Located in east- central Alaska, Fairbanks is home to the second- largest population in the state. At that time, around 35, 000 Latter- day Saints happily resided in over 80 congregations spread throughout Alaska. In January, the First Presidency joyfully announced that the existing Anchorage Temple would undergo careful reconstruction starting in early 2024, making way for a larger, more welcoming temple on the same site as the current meetinghouse. The existing temple is expected to continue serving members during the construction period.
