On April 4, 2021, the Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the Farmington New Mexico Temple during a General Conference. At that time, approximately 70,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints resided in New Mexico, gathered in 138 groups. The Church’s presence in the state began in the 1860s, and over the years, many communities absorbed individuals from Latter-day Saint colonies in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution in 1912. This Temple became the second in New Mexico, following the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple, which was dedicated on March 5, 2000.

Groundbreaking and Site Dedication

The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on April 30, 2022, led by Elder Anthony D. Perkins. Commenting on the event, he said, “To us, this region is home.” Elder Perkins and his wife, Christine, have deep connections to Farmington, where they first met and even held their wedding reception. Approximately 500 Church leaders and guests attended the ceremony to celebrate the commencement of building the 25,000-square-foot Temple. During his dedicatory prayer, Elder Perkins expressed a desire for all individuals to feel included at this significant site.

Architectural Features

The Temple is constructed on 6.63 acres and spans an impressive 29,066 square feet, reaching a height of 126.6 feet at an elevation of 5,638 feet. Interior Design and Art

The interior reflects local Native American influences, featuring motifs such as the piñon pine cone and globemallow flower. The design includes elements like:

  • Carpet and Rugs: Muted turquoise, honey gold, cream, and beige 24-by-24 carpet tiles. The rugs display vibrant designs alongside motifs significant to the Native American populace.
  • Lighting: Crystal, brass, and resin fixtures enhance the aesthetic, with a Murano glass chandelier featured in the brides’ room.
  • Millwork: Crafted from sapele wood, featuring native geometric patterns and floral motifs.
  • Baptismal Font: Railings are made of bronze-colored prefinished metal with glass panels.

The ceiling medallions are constructed from glass-fiber-reinforced gypsum and incorporate native floral designs. Original artwork found within the Temple includes pieces by Kwani Povi Winder, Frank Magleby, and Wilson Hurley.

Currently, the Farmington New Mexico Temple serves the Four Corners region, encompassing parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and the Navajo Nation. This Temple district includes various Spanish-speaking groups and congregations from neighboring Native American reservations.
