Announced to the public on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during General Conference, the Farmington New Mexico Temple fulfills a long-awaited need in the area. At that time, New Mexico was home to approximately 70,000 members of the Church within 138 separate units. The roots of the Church in New Mexico trace back to the 1860s, with many early settlements absorbing individuals fleeing from the Mexican Revolution in 1912. This TEmple, the second in the state, follows the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple, which was dedicated on March 5, 2000.

The groundbreaking event took place on April 30, 2022, led by Anthony D. Perkins of the Quorum of the Seventy. Elder Perkins shared a personal connection to the region, recalling how he and his wife Christine both grew up there and even held their wedding reception in Farmington. Around 500 Church leaders and guests joined the celebration of this 25,000-square-foot TEmple.

Unique Architectural Features

The Farmington New Mexico Temple sits on 6.63 acres and is designed with locally inspired elements. The exterior showcases Portuguese white granite, complemented by bronze Ameristar fencing that enhances the walkways and plazas.

Design Elements

  • Height: The TEmple rises to 126.6 feet, making it an impressive sight against the landscape.
  • Interior Composition: The TEmple encompasses 29,066 square feet and features meticulously designed spaces, including two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Notably, this is the first TEmple constructed in San Juan County.

The architectural design draws heavily from local Native American elements and flora. Various motifs, including the piñon pine cone and globemallow flower, inspire both the building’s exterior and interior features. The carpet showcases muted colors of turquoise, honey gold, cream, and beige, adorned with patterns that reflect the rich culture of the local Native American population.

Artwork and Lighting

The interior art glass features vibrant colors like cream, turquoise, coral, yellow, gold, and more, echoing floral designs and geometric patterns throughout. The lighting fixtures combine crystal, brass, and resin, with standout pieces such as a Murano glass chandelier in the brides’ room.

A New Chapter for the Four Corners Region

Originally dedicated on August 17, 2025, by Apostle Neil L. Andersen, the Farmington New Mexico Temple now serves the Four Corners region, encompassing parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and the Navajo Nation. The TEmple district includes multiple Spanish-speaking units and several groups from surrounding Native American reservations, ensuring a diverse and inclusive atmosphere.

Historical Context

Both the Farmington temple and the state’s first TEmple, the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple, were announced on the same day—April 4—24 years apart. The Farmington TEmple holds additional significance as it was the fifth that Elder Andersen dedicated and the first on the North American continent. His connection to the region goes back to 2000 when he attended the dedication of the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple as a General Authority Seventy.

In conclusion, the Farmington New Mexico Temple not only highlights the architectural and cultural influences of its surroundings, but it also stands as a testament to the enduring faith and history of its community members.
