The journey towards the Farmington New Mexico Temple began with an announcement made on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the General Conference. At the time, the state was home to around 70,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, representing 138 congregations. The history of the Church in New Mexico can be traced back to the 1860s, with key marks surrounding its establishment. The temple in Farmington became the state’s second, following the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple, which was dedicated on March 5, 2000.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 30, 2022, and was led by Anthony D. Perkins, who expressed a strong connection to the area, noting, “To us, this region is home.” The event was well-attended, with around 500 Church leaders and guests celebrating the construction of the 25,000-square-foot temple and meetinghouse. During his site dedication prayer, he hoped that individuals from all walks of life would feel inspired to engage with this sacred space.

After its construction, a public open house was conducted from July 17 to August 2, 2025, leading up to the dedication on August 17, 2025, by Apostle Neil L. Anderson. This dedication marked a significant moment, as Elder Andersen shared, “This Temple is a light in this area and among its people.”
