The announcement for the Farmington New Mexico Temple took place on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during General Conference. At that time, New Mexico was home to approximately 70,000 members of the Church, distributed across about 138 congregations. The Church’s roots in New Mexico stretch back to the 1860s, with various settlements established during that era. Notably, many early settlers included individuals from Latter-day Saint colonies in Mexico, especially after the Mexican Revolution of 1912. This Temple marked a significant development for the state, being the second Temple after the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple, which was dedicated on March 5, 2000.

Groundbreaking and Construction

The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on April 30, 2022, led by Anthony D. Perkins. Elder Perkins, who has personal ties to the area, expressed the sentiment: “To us, this region is home.” Joining him were around 500 Church leaders and guests to commemorate the construction of the 25,000-square-foot facility. Elder Perkins emphasized inclusivity in his dedicatory prayer for the site, envisioning a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds.

Future of the Farmington New Mexico Temple: What You Need to Know

The Farmington New Mexico Temple is designed with several architectural and ornamental elements that reflect its regional context. The exterior is finished with Portuguese white granite, while the landscape design incorporates geometric shapes that align with the local aesthetic.

Interior Design Inspirations

The inside of the Temple presents colors and designs inspired by local Native American culture and native flora, including the piñon pine cone and globemallow flower. The design motifs feature Native American patterns, organic chevrons, and geometric line work. Materials like Crème Ella marble and JuraGold limestone are utilized throughout, along with 24-by-24 carpet tiles in muted turquoise, honey gold, cream, and beige. The vibrant rugs display additional designs in rich colors.

Unique Features

Lighting fixtures crafted from crystal, brass, and resin enhance the ambiance inside. A stunning Murano glass chandelier adorns the brides’ room, while the millwork is skillfully made from sapele wood. These details highlight native geometric patterns and floral motifs, creating a cohesive theme throughout.

Dedication and Service Area

The Temple was dedicated on August 17, 2025, by Apostle Neil L. Anderson. He reflected on the significance of the Temple, stating, “This house of the Lord serves the Four Corners region,” which encompasses some parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and the Navajo Nation. This district includes multiple Spanish-speaking congregations and various groups from local Native American reservations.

The Farmington New Mexico Temple stands at a height of 126.6 feet and occupies an area of 6.63 acres. It features a single attached end spire without a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue. Inside, there are two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. Covering an area of 29,066 square feet, it is a single-story design and serves as the first dedicated Temple in the Farmington area and the first in San Juan County.

Celebrating Dedication Histories

Both the Farmington and Albuquerque Temples were announced on the same date, April 4, highlighting a noteworthy connection between the two sacred sites. Elder Anderson, who dedicated the Farmington Temple, was also present at the dedication of the Albuquerque Temple in 2000, making this a special chapter in his service.

The Farmington New Mexico Temple represents a pivotal moment in the spiritual journey of its members, embodying hope, connection, and dedication to faith in the region.
