The announcement for the Fresno California Temple was made on January 8, 1999, in a letter sent by the First Presidency to priesthood leaders across California. Presidents Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, and James E. Faust were at the helm during this announcement, which set the stage for a new era in the region.
The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred on March 20, 1999, led by John B. Dickson. This event marked a critical turning point, initiating the construction process for this notable establishment.
Open House and Dedication
Following the construction phase, the Temple held a public open house from March 25, 2000, to April 4, 2000. This event attracted an impressive turnout, with a total of 51,000 attendees able to view the interior. The official dedication took place on April 9, 2000, conducted by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who stated, “We dedicate it to Thee, Lord, and we pray for Thy blessing upon it.”
Architectural Features
The Fresno California Temple is built on 2.34 acres and spans 10,850 square feet, standing at a height of 71 feet. Unique architectural elements include a single attached end spire featuring a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The exterior is covered in White Sierra granite, quarried in Raymond, California, contributing to its striking appearance.
Intricate Interior Design
Inside the Temple, two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry provide various facilities for use. The interior is adorned with elegant high-end light fixtures, including crystal chandeliers in the Celestial Room and decorative sconces. In line with the classical style, fixtures feature combinations of crystal and gold-colored metal, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
The interior doors are made of cherry wood, with brass and nickel door hardware providing refined details. The carefully chosen materials and designs complement the serene and inviting atmosphere within.
Art and Symbolism
An original landscape painting by artist Clark Kelley Price, inspired by a spiritual vision, holds a prominent place near the recommend desk. Another local vineyard landscape adds to the artistic expression found throughout the Temple.
