The announcement of the Grand Junction Colorado Temple took place on April 4, 2021, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during the General Conference. This moment marked a new chapter in the history of the Church in Colorado, which saw its first mission established in 1896. Just one year later, in January 1897, the first official congregation was formed. At the time of the announcement, there were over 150,000 Latter-day Saints residing in Colorado, along with approximately 310 congregations. This temple became the third to be announced for the state, following the Denver Colorado Temple in 1986 and the Fort Collins Colorado Temple in 2016.

Groundbreaking and Dedication

The groundbreaking and dedication of the Grand Junction Colorado Temple took place on April 16, 2022. The Apostle Chi Hong Sam Wong, a member of the Quorum of the Seventy, presided over the ceremony. During this event, Elder Wong delivered a dedicatory prayer with heartfelt sentiments: “As we dedicate this holy ground, we pray that we can maintain this positive spiritual momentum in our lives.” The temple itself covers 29,630 square feet and is situated on a 6.94-acre property at the intersection of Horizon Drive and North 12th Street.

Temple Features

The Grand Junction Colorado Temple is characterized by its unique architectural features, including:

  • Exterior: Clad in Portuguese Pedras Salgadas granite, the temple rises to a height of 118 feet, 8 inches. This stone finish harmonizes beautifully with the high-desert landscapes that surround it.
  • Interior: The interior design reflects a palette inspired by the local vegetation, utilizing colors such as crimson, amber, green, and pale pink. Various types of marble, including Mineo, Saffron, Red Jasper, Verde Laguna, and Quetzal Green, form a vivid flooring basis that captures the essence of southwestern canyon landscapes.

Art and Design

The artwork within the temple enriches the visitor experience, featuring pieces that highlight the natural beauty of the American West. Works by artists Ken Stockton and Wilson Hurley, including “Joy in the Journey” and “Sunset at San Ysidro,” echo the stunning vistas found in the region.

Custom Elements

The temple’s design includes custom elements that pay tribute to local nature:

  • Baptismal Font: The unique railing design incorporates geometric motifs that symbolize the two rivers converging in Grand Junction, enhanced by the addition of the claret cup blossom.
  • Millwork: Crafted from African sapele hardwood, the millwork features a delicate peach blossom design, nodding to the area’s orchards.
  • Lighting: Crystal chandeliers adorned with antique brass finishes illuminate vital spaces within the temple, enhancing the atmosphere of elegance and reverence.

Significance Within the Church

The Grand Junction Colorado Temple is notable for several reasons, including being one of the first 100 temples announced by President Russell M. Nelson since he became President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its dedication marked an important milestone as it became the westernmost temple in Colorado, located less than 30 miles from the Utah border.

The temple was also the first to be dedicated by President Jeffrey R. Holland, emphasizing its significance within the broader Church narrative.

Conclusion

The Grand Junction Colorado Temple stands as a testament to faith and community. Its elegant design and thoughtfully curated elements reflect both the unique characteristics of the Colorado landscape and the enduring values of the Latter-day Saint community. As it continues to serve as a House of the Lord, it embodies a spiritual commitment that resonates profoundly within the hearts of many.
