The journey toward establishing the Hartford Connecticut Temple began on October 2, 2010, when Prophet Thomas S. Monson announced its construction during the General Conference. It took several years for plans to materialize. Initially, there was an intent to build in Hartford, but decisions made three years later led to the construction of two other Temples in the region—one in Boston, Massachusetts, and another in White Plains, New York, renamed the Harrison New York Temple. Notably, plans for the Harrison Temple were suspended after the dedication of the Manhattan New York Temple, thereby allowing for the Hartford Connecticut Temple’s creation.
Groundbreaking and site dedication for the Hartford Connecticut Temple occurred on August 17, 2016. The long-awaited public open house ran from September 30 to October 22, 2016, introducing many to this magnificent addition to Hartford. The Temple was officially dedicated on November 20, 2016, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring, who remarked, “In the dedication of a Temple, we dedicate to the Lord a place where His children can come to experience peace and safety.”
Architectural Details
The Hartford Connecticut Temple spans 32,246 square feet and is designed with elegant features that reflect the artistry inherent in its purpose. Its single attached end spire is crowned with a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue, making it a distinctive sight in the landscape. Constructed with granite, the Temple is not only visually striking but also built to last, covering 11.3 acres in total.
Interior Features
The interior of the Temple carries a beautiful design that showcases local artistry. Original wall murals painted by artist Brad Aldridge depict local landscapes, celebrating the natural beauty and history of the Connecticut countryside.
