The announcement for the Hartford Connecticut Temple came on October 2, 2010, during a General Conference led by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. Following this announcement, the groundbreaking took place, with site dedication occurring on August 17, 2023. Although plans were initially shared for a temple 18 years prior, decisions later shifted focus to two other temples: one in Boston, Massachusetts, and the other in White Plains, New York, which would later be named the Harrison New York Temple. After the dedication of the Manhattan New York Temple, plans for the Harrison temple were suspended.
An open house was held from September 30 to October 22, 2016, drawing significant attendance during this period. Ultimately, the Hartford Connecticut Temple was dedicated on November 20, 2016, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring, who remarked, “This beautiful Temple is built for the benefit of all who seek to find peace and direction in life.”
Architectural and Design Features
Spanning 11.3 acres, the Hartford Connecticut Temple features an exterior finish of granite. Its architectural design includes a single attached end spire topped with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue.
Interior Elements
The layout includes two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. Encompassing a total area of 32,246 square feet, the Temple rises to a height of 117.2 feet and sits at an elevation of 179 feet.
Art and Aesthetics
The interior design is highlighted by stunning art glass. The stained glass features classic designs inspired by historic divided light fixtures, showcasing elegant geometric lines and delicate floral motifs. Additionally, original wall murals painted by artist Brad Aldridge depict local landscapes, celebrating the natural beauty of Connecticut’s countryside.
Unique Fixtures
Light fixtures are a blend of elegance and craftsmanship. Instruction rooms include shades made from hand-blown crystal, while the celestial and sealing rooms feature chandeliers designed by Schonbek of New York City, crafted from brass and adorned with Austrian Swarovski crystals. Modified Georgian-style fixtures are found in the entryway and baptistry. The interior doors are constructed from charter oak, complemented by brass hardware. The exterior doors also utilize brass materials, and the railings surrounding the baptismal font are made from brass, further enhancing the overall aesthetic.
