The announcement of the Indianapolis Indiana Temple was made on October 2, 2010, by Prophet Thomas S. Monson. This exciting news led to the groundbreaking and site dedication on September 29, 2012, conducted by Donald L. Hallstrom, who was accompanied by Elder Gregory A. Schwitzer. Following these significant events, the public open house was held from July 17 to August 8, 2015, where an impressive 90,000 individuals explored the Temple’s stunning design. It was officially dedicated on August 23, 2015, by Apostle Henry B. Eyring.

Architectural Excellence

The architectural style of the Indianapolis Indiana Temple features a single attached end spire crowned with a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. The exterior is fashioned from Aero Cream limestone, sourced from Myra, Turkey. The design draws inspiration from influential monuments in Indianapolis, such as the Indiana World War Memorial and the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument.

Interior Design and Artwork

Inside the Temple, intricate art glass windows are adorned with a Celtic knot pattern, interwoven with floral elements that celebrate the tulip poplar, Indiana’s state tree. The various shades of blue in the art glass, accentuated by warm tones, create a serene atmosphere. The flooring and wall base are crafted from Perlatino, Sahara Beige, and Arctic Grey marble, with additional marble blocks quarried from Italy, Pakistan, and Iran.

The original oil painting mural, created by Michael Albrechtsen, showcases beautiful landscape scenes of Indiana. Additionally, the decorative motifs throughout the interior include symbols representing the tulip poplar and circles, signifying Indianapolis’ nickname as the “Circle City.”

Unique Features

The Temple houses two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The baptismal font is surrounded by railings made of bronze, and the font’s marble mosaic tile is sourced from Iran and Pakistan. A uniquely designed bas-relief panel depicts the baptism of Jesus Christ, crafted from clay and molded in silicone rubber to create exquisite details in white marble powder and resin.

Landscaping and Surroundings

The landscaping beautifully complements the Temple, featuring a diverse array of native Indiana flora, including the tulip poplar. The fence, adorned with a Celtic knot motif, reinforces the connection to local culture, while the gate medallion showcases the tulip poplar flower.

The fountain at the site utilizes two types of granite—Giallo Antico and G350—both of which add to the Temple’s aesthetic appeal. The lighting materials include bronze, gold-plated brass, and Swarovski pendant crystals, creating a refined ambiance.

Impact on the Region

Historically, Indiana was home to numerous active Latter-day Saint branches in the mid-1840s, but the community witnessed a significant decline following westward migrations. After the early 20th century, Latter-day Saints began to settle in Indiana again. The Indianapolis Indiana Temple serves as an influential center for over 30,000 members in nine stakes, revitalizing the region’s connection to this faith.

With its rich history, exquisite design, and significant impact, the Indianapolis Indiana Temple stands out as an architectural marvel and a center of faith for many in the area.
