Jacksonville Florida Temple: A New Beginning for the Area

The Jacksonville Florida Temple, located at 3323 Loretto Road, Jacksonville, Florida, marks an exciting new chapter for the local community. Announced on October 2, 2022, by Prophet Russell M. Nelson during General Conference, this temple stands out not only for its architectural beauty but also for the significance it carries for the Latter-day Saints in the region.

The announcement of the Jacksonville Florida Temple came at a time when Florida was home to approximately 160,000 Latter-day Saints and more than 280 congregations. At the time, other temples in the state included the Orlando Florida Temple, Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple, and the Tampa Florida Temple, with the Tallahassee Florida Temple under construction.

The groundbreaking and site dedication for the temple occurred on January 24, 2026, celebrated by Massimo De Feo. This moment marked a significant milestone, as it was the first groundbreaking of the year.

Key Features and Design

The temple will occupy 6.6 acres and will feature an exterior finish in granite. Architectural elements include a single attached end spire, although it will not have a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni Statue atop it. Spanning 29,000 square feet, the Jacksonville Florida Temple will be a single-story building.

Inside, it will boast two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The elevation of the temple will be 18 feet, enhancing its visibility and presence in the area.

Historical Context

This temple holds the title of being the first built in the city of Jacksonville and the first in Duval County. Moreover, it is the fifth temple constructed in the state of Florida.

An interesting historical note is that Jacksonville was the site of the first stake organized in Florida back in 1947, which was also the first in the South. This was a pivotal moment facilitated by Elder Charles A. Callis, who presided over the Southern States Mission for 25 years and fulfilled his desire to establish a stake in the area shortly before he passed away.

Future Prospects

The Jacksonville Florida Temple will be the closest option for Latter-day Saints residing in the area, reducing the current travel distance of approximately 125 miles to the Orlando Florida Temple located to the south.

The rendering for the Jacksonville Florida Temple was released on December 16, 2024, showcasing the beauty and uniqueness that this new addition will bring to Jacksonville.

In conclusion, the Jacksonville Florida Temple is not just another building; it represents a significant step forward for the Latter-day Saints in the region, promising to foster a sense of belonging while contributing to the rich heritage of Jacksonville and the broader Florida area. With its groundbreaking in 2026 and numerous thoughtful design elements, the hope is that this temple will serve the community well for generations to come.
