Discovering the Kansas City Missouri Temple
Nestled in the heart of the Midwest, the Kansas City Missouri Temple stands as a testament to faith, history, and community. Its story begins long before its construction, harkening back to the early 1830s when Latter-day Saints first dedicated a site for a temple in Independence, Missouri. Unfortunately, due to the tumultuous times that followed, including an extermination order issued by Governor Boggs in 1838, those early ambitions never materialized.
Fast forward to the mid-20th century, as the Church began to flourish once again in the region. In 1956, the first stake in Kansas City was established, paving the way for significant growth. By 2008, the number of Latter-day Saints in Missouri and Kansas had ballooned to around 100,000 members across 21 stakes, paving the way for the new temple’s construction.
Architectural Marvel
The Kansas City Missouri Temple, which covers an impressive 8.05 acres, officially broke ground on May 8, 2010, with Elder Ronald A. Rasband leading the ceremony. The building is a sight to behold, with its exterior crafted from precast concrete and featuring two distinct towers topped with a gold-leafed statue of the angel Moroni. The temple rises majestically to a height of 150 feet, further highlighting its striking presence against the backdrop of the Kansas City skyline.
Inside, this sacred space encompasses 32,000 square feet and includes two instruction rooms, three sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The interior embodies a sense of tranquility, enriched by the use of white oak harvested from the historical site of Adam-ondi-Ahman, creating a serene environment for worship and reflection.
A Historic Dedication
The temple was dedicated on May 6, 2012, in a memorable ceremony led by President Thomas S. Monson, who acknowledged the significance of the site in Latter-day Saints’ history. He expressed a sentiment that resonated deeply with attendees, noting that the spirits of the early Saints who sacrificed and sought refuge in this area were present in their celebrations that day.
Following its dedication, the Kansas City Missouri Temple opened its doors to the public, attracting nearly 91,000 visitors during the open house from April 7 to April 28, 2012. The inviting grounds, adorned with vibrant flowers and trees, promise a welcoming atmosphere for all who visit.
