The journey towards the Las Vegas Nevada Temple began on April 7, 1984, when Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley announced its construction. The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on November 30, 1985, led by Apostle Dallin H. Oaks. Following several years of anticipation, the public open house ran from November 16 to December 9, 1989, attracting an impressive 297,480 attendees.
Dedication and Design
The Las Vegas Nevada Temple was officially dedicated from December 16 to December 18, 1989, also by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, who stated, “This is a sacred place. Here, we gather the virtues of the world.” The Temple encompasses a total area of 80,350 square feet, spans three levels, and is built on 10.3 acres at an elevation of 1,946 feet. At a majestic height of 137 feet, it includes an angel Moroni statue atop its six attached spires, which face east, symbolically heralding the Second Coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Architectural Features
The exterior finish features white precast stone walls and a copper roof, complemented by striking Art Deco-inspired stained glass. The interior of the Temple captivates with its carefully designed light fixtures from Preciosa, renowned for their custom brass and frosted-glass chandeliers and pendant lights. The Celestial Room particularly stands out, with its two massive chandeliers, each 10 feet high and 8 feet wide, adorned with thousands of pieces of cut crystal.
