The Temple was announced on April 7, 1984, by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, marking the beginning of a significant chapter for the region. Groundbreaking took place on November 30, 1985, led by a prominent Church leader whose contributions were foundational to the project. A public open house held from November 16 to December 9 in 1989 attracted 297,480 attendees, showcasing the significant interest in the Temple before its dedication from December 16 to 18, 1989, also officiated by Gordon B. Hinckley. As he stated during the dedication, “Here is a sacred house of the Lord, where men and women can go to receive the blessings that are available to them.”
Architectural Features
The Las Vegas Nevada Temple spans an impressive 80,350 square feet and reaches a height of 137 feet, gracefully framed by six spires. The exterior is adorned with white precast stone walls and a striking copper roof, while the art glass features geometric patterns inspired by Art Deco design, harmonizing with the desert surroundings.
Inside, the Temple offers four instruction rooms, six sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The Celestial Room is particularly breathtaking, showcasing natural light that streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, creating enchanting rainbows that dance on the walls. Focal points include magnificent chandeliers designed by Preciosa, featuring thousands of pieces of cut crystal that draw the eye upward.
