The groundbreaking and site dedication took place on September 22, 1951, led by Prophet David McKay. During the dedication, President McKay described the event as one of the most memorable services held within the Church, remarking on the notable attendance of general authorities at the ceremony.
The public open house ran from December 19, 1955, to February 18, 1956, attracting an impressive 632,361 individuals. The dedication ceremonies conducted by Prophet McKay spanned from March 11 to March 14, 1956, marking a significant moment in the Temple’s history.
Architectural Details
Built on 13 acres of land, the Los Angeles California Temple covers 146,000 square feet, with a total area of 190,614 square feet. The exterior is adorned with Mo-Sai stone facing, composed of crushed quartz and white Portland cement, sourced from Utah and Nevada. The exterior wainscot features Rockville granite from Minnesota, chosen for its durability and ability to discourage vandalism.
One prominent feature of the Temple is its single attached end spire, surmounted by a gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue. This statue, sculpted by Millard Mallin, measures 15 ½ feet tall and was placed atop the Temple on October 3, 1954. Notably, the Los Angeles California Temple is one of only five Temples where the Angel Moroni holds the Gold Plates, alongside other notable Temples.
Indoor Facilities
Inside, the Temple offers four instruction rooms, each designed in a four-stage progressive format, along with ten sealing rooms and one baptistry. The priesthood assembly room accommodates 2,000 people and features three pulpits at each end. Unique to its history, the Los Angeles California Temple was the last designed for live acting presentations.
The Temple’s interior is adorned with meticulously hand-painted murals, displayed in various progressive-style ordinance rooms, including the Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, Terrestrial Room, and Celestial Room. Remodeled in 1981, additional enhancements included audiovisual equipment for motion-picture presentations.
The Grounds and Environment
Situated on Santa Monica Boulevard in Westwood, the Temple grounds are lushly landscaped with an array of trees, including Canary Island pines, palm trees, olives, rare Chinese ginkgos, and vibrant bird-of-paradise. Two fountains and an expansive reflection pool enhance the serene atmosphere.
The grounds also feature several family-themed statues, along with a family history center. Each December, thousands of Christmas lights illuminate the Temple grounds, creating a festive ambiance.
